Webber set to become a legend in Australia
News Sunday 13th March 2010 By Geoff Meyer
With the 2010 Formula One Grand Prix opener in Bahrain upon us, Australian driver Mark Webber is gearing up for his most anticipated season yet. The 2010 season marks Webber’s eighth year in F1, and perhaps his best chance at becoming Australia’s third world champion.
A member of the Red Bull Racing team since 2007, Webber wrapped up his most successful season in the competition in 2009 - winning both the German and Brazilian Grands Prix.
As the only Australian in the F1 competition, Webber boasts the support of an entire nation, with former F1 world champion and fellow Aussie, Alan Jones, a big fan.
Jones, who recorded five victories and claimed the F1 drivers' world championship with Williams in 1980, has every confidence Webber can achieve similar success in the season ahead.
“He’s already displayed that he’s got the speed, he’s got the stamina, he’s very fit and he’s very consistent.
“They’re the things you need for a championship,” Jones told speedcafe.com.au.
With the confidence of two Grand Prix victories, his first pole position, and a career-best fourth-placed finish in 2009 behind him, Webber and Red Bull’s new RB6 are on track for an exciting season in 2010, Jones believes.
“Winning your first race is certainly a terrific morale-booster, and I believe that Mark drove with a lot more confidence after he won his first Grand Prix,” Jones added.
“He had a handle on what to do and, providing Red Bull give him a good car this year - which I think they will - he’s well-set to have a crack at the championship.”
