Corser to get tough in World Superbike Championship
News Saturday 26th March 2010
With pace to burn and experience on his side the super-fit Corser is confident of improving on his 16-point haul in Australia.
"At Phillip Island I was struggling a little in fifth and sixth gear, our top speed was a little off and it made it very difficult to pass," Corser explained.
"We've built a new engine and the testing has been great. We've picked up 10km/h at top speed since Phillip Island and I am very happy with the bike.
"We need to sort our qualifying and super qualifying out and get ourselves further up the front to challenge and I reckon we're ready to do that in Portugal."
Corser said a rigorous training regime had him in better physical condition than last season when he finished 13th.
The two-time world champion expects the extra hours in the gym will pay off in a sport he labelled "footy on two wheels".
"The racing that the superbikes put on is the most entertaining there is," Corser said.
"The GPs and F1 are not the same. We get up nice and close, give each other a bash, it's such an unpredictable sport.
"It's an incredible spectacle and I think motorsport fans are loving it. You don't know what's going to happen at every turn and the riders are just going for it.
"The boys aren't shooting in a protest at the end of a race. They get on with it."
Corser said this weekend's venue, the physically demanding Portimao circuit, suited his style.
It hosted the final round of racing in 2009 with the Australian unable to finish the first race and fighting back gamely for ninth in the second.
"It's a lot like Phillip Island, an undulating track, elevations throughout.
"You have to be all over the bike to keep the front wheel from lifting off the ground so it's a good workout.
"Testing has been good so I can't wait to rip in."
The round will be shown live and exclusive on Fox Sports 2 and Fox Sports 2HD on Sunday at 9.30pm (EDT) with Corser keen to impress: "It's in prime time, I better put on a good show and give these kids something to chase."
