Vettel leads Red Bull to top two spots in Australia - Qualification

News Sunday 27th March 2010

Germany's Sebastian Vettel has pipped Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber to secure pole position at Sunday's Australian grand prix. Vettel clocked a one minute, 23.919 second lap at the Albert Park street circuit in the qualifying session - the day's only sub 1:24 lap - to hold off Australia's Webber and claim his second consecutive pole position this year and seventh of his Formula One career.

Webber, who briefly topped the timesheets in the final leg of qualifying before Vettel's best lap, recorded a time of 1:24.035 to keep his chances of a maiden win at his home grand prix alive.

Ferrari's Fernando Alonso will line up in third place after a 1:24.111 with reigning champion Jenson Button alongside him in fourth spot. Alonso's team-mate Felipe Massa was fifth fastest, while young German Nico Rosberg again qualified ahead of team-mate Michael Schumacher.

Rosberg will start sixth with seven-time world champion Schumacher in seventh. Button's team-mate Lewis Hamilton, charged on summons with improper use of a vehicle after being caught by police doing a burnout when leaving Albert Park on Friday night, could only qualify in 11th after a disappointing run.

Hamilton blamed lack of grip in his tyres for being unable to post a quick time.
