Pourcel and Villopoto take wins in AMA Supercross
News Monday 28th March 2010 By VitalMX
The night show, however, was a different story. He took wins in both the heat race and main event, and showed that he wants to keep the pressure on in the title chase.
Ivan Tedesco (Valli Motorsports Rockstar Yamaha) scored a $1,500 Spike TV holeshot check to start the main event, but Villopoto dove by in the second corner and was never threatened for the rest of the 20-lap main.
The real action with from second on back, and there was a pretty serious freight train of riders that these guys were in, including Windham, Tedesco, Dungey, Hill, Millsaps, and Canard. Supercross series points leader Ryan Dungey (Rockstar Makita Suzuki) was in fifth on the first lap, and looking to try and chase down Villopoto. He passed Josh Hill (San Manuel / Yamaha / JSE) for fourth on the second lap, Ivan Tedesco for third on the fourth lap, and Kevin Windham (GEICO Powersports Honda) for second on lucky lap 13.
The big mover, however, was Trey Canard (Honda Red Bull Racing), who was on the move and charging from seventh spot. He got by Hill on lap four, and then engaged in a short but serious battle with his temporary teammate, Davi Millsaps, who seemed in no mood to let him by. It took Trey one lap to get by Davi, and another six before he passed Tedesco for fourth. He wasn’t settling for that, however, and began reeling in Windham. After making contact once, Trey dropped back, but he kept charging, and nipped Windham at the line by a wheel. That brought his record to five straight podiums in six attempts. Very impressive for a 250 rider just test-driving the 450 class before moving up next year.

Besides the podium trio of Villopoto, Dungey and Canard, there was Windham and Tedesco in the top five. The top ten was rounded out with Millsaps, Hill, Tommy Hahn (Rockstar Energy Suzuki), and the JGRMX Toyota/Muscle Milk/Yamaha teammates, Justin Brayton and Michael Byrne.
Jacksonville also marked the first time we’ve notice anti-doping tests being conducted, with Ryan Dungey, Trey Canard, and Josh Hill all being escorted by anti-doping officials after the race.

In the Supercross Lites main event, it was Kelly Smith nabbing the $1,000 Spike TV holeshot check. The fact that he nailed a holeshot shouldn’t be surprising to anyone. That he did it as a replacement rider on the Honda of Troy squad for an injured Darryn Durham is what made it a surprise. Brett Metcalfe (GEICO Powersports Honda) quickly took over the lead, and came across the line on the first lap followed by Austin Stroupe (Rockstar Makita Suzuki), and Christophe Pourcel (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki).

Those three stayed in close contact for the first five laps, and one of the best spots for passing opportunities was at the end of the whoops where it connected back on to the start straight. Several times, Stroupe would sneak around the inside of the corner, while Metcalfe would rail around the berm on the outside, and they’d nearly collide on the exit…at least until Metcalfe started changing up his line.

While the lead duo were duking it out, Pourcel was reeling them both in, and he squared under Stroupe to take over second on lap six. Shortly after that, he passed Metcalfe, and he began to stretch his lead. Meanwhile, Stroupe got by Metcalfe a couple laps later…but Pourcel had already checked out.

That’s how they finished, but it wasn’t without a last-minute scare for Pourcel, who went down at the end of the whoops after making contact with a lapped rider. Luckily for the series points leader, his Kawasaki kept running, and he was able to remount, though with Stroupe in close contact. At the checkers, it was Pourcel, with a 1.3 second gap over Stroupe. That extended his points lead to eight, with two rounds (Houston and St. Louis) remaining.

Notable rides? How about Justin Barcia, who came from 11th at the start to fourth at the finish. Or James DeCotis, who finished fifth on his privateer Honda?
The rest of the top ten was filled out by Troy Adams (BTOSports.com/BBMX/Palmetto Suzuki), Kyle Cunningham (Valli Motorsports Rockstar Yamaha), the Suzuki City/Nitro Circus duo of Matt Lemoine (Suzuki and Steven Clarke, and Justin Sipes (WWR/Confused Clothing).
The hard luck award of the night might belong to Ryan Sipes (MotoConcepts Yamaha), who finished second last week and after getting stuck in a pair of first turn crashes, he came up one position short of a transfer spot in the Lites LCQ.
After 12 straight weeks, the series gets its first and only break next weekend, before resuming in Houston.
