Dungey is the man in USA Supercross - Title his
News Sunday 18th April 2010 By TransworldMotocross
With one title already sealed and delivered to the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki team, all eyes were on the Supercross class and the dramatic points battle between Rockstar/Makita Suzuki rookie Ryan Dungey and Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto. The drama peaked in the Supercross main event, as the track savagely claimed victims Ryan Villopoto and Ivan Tedesco. As you read this, Villopoto is likely undergoing surgery on broken tib/fib, while Tedesco’s collapsed lung is being tended to.
Lites Qualifying
Lites Heat One
In the first heat race of the night, the Geico Powersports/ Factory Connection Honda veteran of Brett Metcalfe stole the holeshot and proceeded to gap the rest of the field in the six lap sprint. The duel for second place was a battle between Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki teammates Christophe Pourcel and Dean Wilson. Wilson stalked the recently crowned champion for a handful of laps before using a short triple to launch over Pourcel for second. As the laps wore on, Wilson mounted a charge on Metcalfe and shrank the distance between the two but ran out of time when the checkered flag flew.

Lites Heat Two
The day’s quickest Lites qualifier Ryan Sipes and his Motoconcepts Yamaha won the drag race to the long first turn, but DNA Shred Stix/Star Racing Yamaha’s Martin Davalos quickly took over the top spot. Davalos jumped under Geico Powersports/ Factory Connection Honda hotshot Justin Barcia for second place, and then a lap later used the same triple Wilson used in heat one to get by Sipes for the lead. The trio would run in that order for the remaining laps and finish within three seconds of one another.

Lites LCQ
A huge first turn pile up and a second massive get together in the middle of the track’s lone triple left a decent number of the field on the ground, but none of this seemed to faze Valli Motorsports/ Rockstar Yamaha’s Kyle Cunningham and Honda of Troy rider Levi Kilbarger. The two would easily make the main with Kyle Gills nabbing up the Gas Card on his Proflow Kawasaki.

Justin Barcia ran away with the Spike Holeshot on his Geico Powersports/ Factory Connection Honda and never looked back. His teammate Brett Metcalfe was in tow, fighting off multiple pass attempts from Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Dean Wilson lap after lap. In the opening laps Wilson found himself taking a soil sample and dropped down to fourth position. Wilson charged right back by all the riders that made their way by to reclaim second place. Wilson’s teammate and recently crowned champion Christophe Pourcel had a night that was the exact opposite of how his title defense went. After making a mistake and parking his bike on top of a Tuff Block, the Frenchman spent the duration of the first lap pulling the bike down and back onto the track. He would be lapped by Barcia on lap two and pull off to the trailer before lap six.
But all eyes were on Barcia. Lap after lap the youngster built a lead, nine seconds by lap four and eleven seconds by lap six. He carved through lapped traffic with relative ease and capped off his rookie year with a more than impressive win and a fifteen second lead to match.

Supercross Qualifying
Supercross Heat One
Point leader Ryan Dungey shot out of the gate on his Rockstar/Makita Suzuki in the first 450 heat but Red Bull Honda’s Davi Millsaps squeezed by Dungey in the opening seconds of the race for the lead. Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Chad Reed would also sneak by Dungey, as a quick move in the off chamber corner shut down the Suzuki rider’s momentum. Millsaps used the clear track ahead of him to open a slight lead over Reed and Dungey, but a hard get off would drop him back to eighteenth. The Honda rider hit the ground again just laps later and quickly pulled to the paddock to prepare for the LCQ. Reed scooped up the position and steadily distanced himself from Red Bull Honda’s Andrew Short and Dungey until running into lap traffic in the final lap. The three top riders would cross the finish line to take the white flag within feet of one another, resulting in an epic last lap. Reed securely rode off to the win as Dungey made a block pass on Short for second place.

Rockstar/Hart and Huntington Honda’s Chris Blose led the pack to the first turn but wasn’t able to hold off the Monster Energy Kawasaki of Ryan Villopoto. The day’s fastest qualifier Justin Brayton on his Muscle Milk/JGR Yamaha stood Villopoto up in the ninety degree right hander and tore off with an impressive lead. Geico Powersports/Factory Connection Honda pilot and fan favorite Kevin Windhan had a front row seat to the battle in third place, and the riders would finish the eight laps in that order.

Supercross LCQ
After an eventful heat race, Davi Millsaps made his way to the line for the LCQ in a last gasp bid to make the main. Millsaps led from the second the gate hit the ground and ran away from second place Chris Blose and third place rider Weston Peick and his Rock River Yamaha. Peick climbed to third after a last lap pass on Red Seven Kawasaki rider Kyle Partridge and stole away the gas card with his third place finish.

Supercross Main
The hype of 2010 seemed to be over when both Chad Reed and James Stewart hit the ground back in Phoenix and both left the second round with injuries. But that only opened the door for the next generation of riders, namely Ryan Dungey and Ryan Villopoto. The two have battled tooth and nail for the points lead this year, never once leaving a race with what seemed like a comfortable and safe advantage over the other. We have been waiting all year for the two to be in close quarters for a full twenty laps, and we saw what it looks this weekend.
Nick Wey blitzed to the Spike holeshot on his Babbbit’s/TiLube Kawasaki with LCQ transfer Davi Millsaps and Ryan Dungey close behind. Ryan Dungey made quick work of the two and took off as he tried to distance himself from Villopoto, who was in nearby third. Dungey and Villopoto played a cat and mouse game lap after lap, keeping the fans guessing if the lead was growing or shrinking. Villopoto made sure everyone knew he was reeling the Suzuki rider, and finally was on his rear fender near the halfway point. Coming into the hairpin just before the finish, the pair collided after an attempted block pass by the Kawasaki rider went awry. Going down in a heap, they scrambled to get up before the other. Thirteen seconds later, they both remounted, Villopoto before Dungey, with Red Bull Honda’s Andrew Short right on their heels. RV held onto his lead for a handful of laps until the small triple into a tall bowl turn ripped down to the cement got the best of him. He stepped over the bars with his Kawasaki slamming into him as he hit the ground. His lifeless body had to be carried off by the medical team while Dungey cruised by to the win. Kevin Windham moved through the field, battling Chad Reed and Andrew Short along the way. After Villopoto’s vicious crash, Windham’s recently inherited second place position didn’t seem to be enough for him as he hammered his way around the track to close in on Dungey. Dungey’s lead was safe though, as he rode off to the main event win and what seems like a definite championship title.
