In preparation for the GP of the Netherlands in Valkenswaard next weekend, Tanel Leok and David Guarneri entered the third round of the Open Dutch Championship in Gemert. The event was popular with GP riders and the organizing club MAC St-Christoffel was once again proud to offer the crowd a strong line-up.

Featuring names like Kevin Strijbos and Marc De Reuver (Suzuki), Evgeny Bobryshev and Gareth Swanepoel (CAS-Honda) and Aprilia Factory rider Josh Coppins on top of the regular Dutch riders and the LS Motors-Honda squad.

The day started excellent for the Honda Europe supported team with Leok claiming another pole position on his CRF 450R. While The Estonian Express has a reputation for being a strong qualifier and fast in the sand, the second time of Davide Guarneri was equally impressive. Strijbos; Söderström and Swanepoel rounded out the top five.

As the MX1 field blasted out of the gate for their opening moto Guarneri powered to the holeshot. The Italian seemd to gel really well with the deep and soft sand of the Wolsbosch track putting in consistent lap times and quickly creating a a gap. The fastest lap of the race was the icing on the cake for ‘Pota’ who cruised on to his first ever Dutch championsip moto win! Leok, who became a father to baby boy Travis on Wednesday, overcame a poor start. He bounced back from 10th place to finish 3rd behind Guarneri and Strijbos.

The second moto saw a three-way battle develop after holeshotman Strijbos was chased by Guarneri and Leok. However Davide and Tanel had to come through from repectively sixth and seventh position. The Honda mounted pairing pushed Strijbos until the end but the Belgian resisted to come home first. Guarneri was second, former Dutch Champion Leok third.

Davide Guarneri, winner

“I think a surprised myself as much as anyone today! To beat the sand specialists at their own game is a pretty good feeling. The riding felt very good and luckily my knee (note: Guarneri hurt is knee at the Mantova GP) was fine that was a big relief after I had to take some rest. I pushed hard in the second moto to catch Strijbos, but Kevin was a bit stronger. For sure this result gives me

confidence to go to Valkenswaard with the right state of mind.”

Tanel Leok, 2nd overall

“Today was quite good, although I would like to have won here in Gemert of course. My starts were not the best, especially in the first moto but overall this was a good warmup for the GP in Valkenswaard. Hopefully I can build on this result and turn my GP season around next weekend. I’m ready, the bike is ready and I know we can do it!”
