Dungey Goes Out in Style in Vegas

News Monday 10th May 2010 By Transworldmx

Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey wrapped up the Supercross series two weeks ago in Seattle, but he still came into the sold out Sam Boyd Stadium and led the 20-lap main event from start-to-finish.

GEICO Powersports/Honda rider Kevin Windham was looking to keep his win streak going tonight, but he still rode a solid race to finish third in the main and second in series points. In the East vs. West Shootout,  it was a huge night for the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki team as Jake Weimer, Josh Hansen, Chistophe Pourcel, and Dean Wilson took the top four positions. Weimer led the race from start-to-finish, while his three teammates battled it out behind him. For some, tonight marked the end to racing until January, while for others, racing will start again in two weeks at the Hangtown National.

Supercross Lites Qualifier

Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider Christophe Pourcel grabbed the holeshot and led the pack down “Monster Alley”, but at the beginning of lap two, Pourcel fell and his teammate, Dean Wilson, quickly took over the lead. Wilson started to pull away from the back, but Martin Davalos was quickly on his tail, however; Davalos fell off the pace of Wilson, and Wilson took a fairly easy win.

At the start of heat two, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/ Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer quickly jumped out to the lead, but his teammate, Josh Hansen, was right on his rear tire as the two came flying off the infamous ski jump and into the first turn. Hansen tried putting in a last minute charge, but by the time the checkered flag flew, Weimer had about a one second lead on his teammate.

When the gates dropped for the East vs. West shootout, it was the West Coast champion, Jake Weimer, who grabbed the holeshot on his teammate, Dean Wilson.  East Coast champion, Christophe Pourcel, quickly made the move on Wilson, and it was the two champions going one and two on the second lap. Josh Hansen was quickly reeling in Trey Canard, and he eventually made the pass on the GEICO Powersports/Honda rider on the third lap.  So just like that, it was all four Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki riders taking the top four spots. Wilson made the move on Pourcel on the fifth lap, and he quickly started to work on Weimer. Hansen was still on the move, and he eventually made the pass on Pourcel as well.

On the final lap, Hansen kicked up the pace, and quickly made a pass on Wilson. It wasn’t over for Wilson, though, as Pourcel also managed to get around him on the last lap.  When the checkers flew, it was Weimer, Hansen, Pourcel, Wilson, and Justin Barcia taking the top five spots, respectively. Weimer was obviously happy for his win on the podium as he said, “I’m so happy for the hole team. I’m excited I got first, and I’m glad we got one through four.”

GEICO Powersports/Honda’s Kevin Windham grabbed the holeshot, but as he went into the first corner, San Manuel/ Yamaha’s Josh Hill dove on the inside of Windham, and Hill took the lead. The two battled side by side for most of the first lap, but at the start of lap two, Windham jumped the wall after the whoops, and he took over the lead. Things were getting tight for Justin Brayton as Red Bull/Honda rider Andrew Short battled with him for most of the third lap, but Short finally made the pass stick on lap four.  It looked as if Hill was going to finish with a solid second, but he lost his front end as he came around the flat corner, outside the stadium.  As Windham took the checkers, he had a 5.7 lead on Short.

2010 Supercross champion Ryan Dungey took the holeshot in heat two. Reed was right on Dungey, but Kyle Cunningham snuck on the inside of Reed, and took over second. Cunningham was all over Dungey on lap two, but he started to fall off the pace. Finally on lap three, Reed made pass on Cunningham right before the finish, and for the remaining five laps, the top three would stay in that order.

As the riders lined up for the 20-lap main event, Ryan Dungey grabbed a massive holeshot aboard his Rockstar Makita Suzuki, and he led the pack through “Monster Alley” to get the Spike holeshot award. MotoConcepts/Yamaha rider Kyle Chisolm was in second coming into the first turn, but Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Chad Reed quickly made a move on him so he could set his sights on Dungey. Dungey started to slowly move away from Reed, but Reed started to reel him back in on the fourth lap. At the same time, Windham had moved his way through the pack as he got up fifth place, and he started to work on Red Bull/Honda’s Davi Millsaps. On the fifth lap, Millsaps and Windham went side by side into the whoops, but Windham had a better drive and he flew by Millsaps.

As the riders hit the halfway point, Dungey started to put a gap on Reed, and he would throw down the fastest lap time of the night.  Kyle Cunningham and Andrew short were on the move, and they both got around Millsaps. At the end of the 20 laps, Dungey won the final round of the Monster Energy/AMA and FIM World Championship. Emotional about the loss of Andrew McFarlane, Reed said on the podium, “I really wanted to win that tonight. I had mixed emotions coming into this tonight with my son being born, and my really good friend, Andrew Mcfarlane passing away.”
