Raga wins in Japan -Trial World Champs
News Sunday 06th June 2010
Adam Raga - Gas Gas scored his first outdoor victory of the year on day two of the Japanese Grand Prix at Honda’s Twin Ring Circuit in Motegi, beating Saturday’s victor, Toni Bou - Repsol Montesa HRC by four marks.
Jeroni Fajardo - Beta completed the podium at round three of the 2010 SPEA FIM Trial World Championship.
While heavy rain disrupted Saturday’s trial the circuit was blessed with sunshine throughout day two. However the sections on Sunday, which were spread out around the undulating woodland perimeter of the bitumen racetrack, were still relatively slippery. In the most part this was courtesy of deep, wet mud that lie sandwiched between the large rocks, leaving a dangerously slick trail across many of them. The testing conditions failed to deter Raga though, and he was untouchable on the first tour. The Spaniard dropped just twelve marks on a lap that caught many of the top riders out, including Bou.
Raga remained cool in front of seven thousand enthusiastic fans on lap two, maintaining his composure to secure the win in compelling fashion, despite nervously fiving sections twelve and thirteen. Yesterday’s winner, Mister Consistent Toni Bou could do little to prevent a possessed Raga and had to settle for second place. This failed to dent his championship lead though, and he leaves Japan eight points clear of Raga in the title race.
Behind the top two was an epic scrap for the final podium place between two men with very different motives. Crowd favourite Fujinami, who had finished fourth twenty-four hours earlier wanted to give his home fans something to cheer about, while a steadfast Fajardo was spurred on by the thought of a second visit to the podium in as many days. In the end Fajardo came through the war of attrition with one less mark, relegating a disappointed and clearly frustrated Fujinami to fourth place. Albert Cabestany - Sherco, who had finished a lowly seventh on day one, completed the top five.
After getting a taste for the top step of the podium on the first day of competition, Jack Challoner - Beta was in no mood to relinquish his winning status in the Junior division. The young Brit was in fine form yet again, dropping just nineteen marks during two laps of a course that he made look easy. Alexandre Ferrer - Sherco improved on his day one result of fourth, finishing runner-up ahead of third placed Fransesc Moret - Montesa. Challoner’s double win puts him within three points of Alfredo Gomez - Montesa in the title race.
In the Youth class the imposing figure of Pol Tarres - Gas Gas relegated day one victor Jack Sheppard - Beta to second place courtesy of two less marks. In a repeat of his performance the previous day, Carles Traviesa - Gas Gas was third. The result saw Tarres stretch his championship lead over Traviesa to eight points, while Sheppard is a further two points adrift.
The championship now takes a short break before resuming later this month for the British Grand Prix at Fort William, Scotland, which will mark the final two-day event in this year’s series.
